The men, who call themselves ''carnies'', spent Tuesday setting up the ride for this weekend's AP & I show in Levin. The scares of the fair By TASHA BLACK Town meets country in the 106th Horowhenua AP & I Show this weekend with a wood chop- ping competition, sheep racing, alpaca judging, candyfloss, machinery and a merry-go- round. Kicking off the two-day event is the sheep dog trials on Saturday morning, along with dairy cattle, sheep and pig judg- ing. There will be a showing of livestock, equestrian compe- titions, home industries, sheep shearing, craft stalls, trade exhibits and sideshows. Horowhenua Vintage Farm Machinery Club and Levin Model Railway Club will both have displays. Those feeling lucky can take their chances at It s In The Bag and choose between cash prizes and mystery prizes from a bag, which include a sewing machine and Fly Buys points. Organiser Mary Davis said a new event this year was sheep racing, which will see spray- painted sheep race against each other over 40-metres. Judy Mahon, from Mahons Amusements, said there will be 10 rides this year, including family favourites, like the merry-go-round, dodgem cars and the ghost train. For those after more of an adrenalin hit there is the Scream Machine, Hurricane and, billed as the fair s scariest ride, the really fast Explorer. Saturday and Sunday, Showgrounds Events Park, Levin, adults $10, under 15s $5, pre- schoolers free, family pass $25 (2 adults 2 children). New airport manager Jason Russell has been appointed the new manager for Kapiti Air- port. The Kapiti local is a qualified automotive engineer and flight instructor, has a commercial pilot s license and business man- agement experience. I ve just come from the Kapiti Aero Club as the academy man- ager. Mr Russell replaces Heather Woodcock.
