Pro golfer lends a hand to TrueGrip By BEN STRANG An Australian professional golfer will be wearing New Zealand possum on his left hand after a Waikanae company organised to sponsor his glove in 2012. Michael Wright will be playing in the New Zealand Open this weekend with the new glove, after his caddy inquired about using it. His caddy was up at 4am in Sydney looking for a new golf glove for Michael, and came across mine, Waikanae s Greg Howard, founder of the TrueGrip possum skin glove, said. Wright, who won the Western Australia PGA Tour event at The Vines in October, has been a pro- fessional for 12 years. Mr Howard said it was a big deal for his glove to be picked up by a professional golfer, as it would see international exposure for his brand. Basically all that needs to hap- pen is for Michael to go over and win a tournament in the States, and for the commentator to men- tion that he is using a possum skin glove from New Zealand, he said. The same thing happened for Kia Kaha in 2005 when Michael Campbell won the US Open. The next day their website experienced a 13,000 per cent rise in traffic. Mr Howard said he has been in touch with television commen- tators at the New Zealand Open and hopes to have his glove mentioned on air. Wright, who spent 2011 playing on the OneAsia Tour, televised to more than 400,000 viewers world- wide, will be using the glove for the entire 2012 campaign. Mr Howard said it would cost about $2 million a year to have his possum leather glove used by the likes of Tiger Woods, which showed the exposure players equipment could have.
