Paul Holmes wants New Zealanders to know the real story behind the Mt Erebus air disaster, and to clear up once and for all'' the confusion which he claims aided a cover-up'' that went all the way to the top. On November 28, 1979, an Air New Zealand DC-10 sightseeing flight, piloted by Captain Jim Collins and First Officer Greg Cassin, crashed into the side of Antarctica's Mt Erebus killing all 237 passengers and 20 crew on board. The report, by Chief Inspector of Air Accidents Ron Chippendale, that followed seven months later, laid the blame squarely on pilot error. A Royal Commission of Inquiry led by Justice Peter Mahon exonerated the two pilots the following year, and Air New Zealand finally apologised to the families of the crash victims in 2009. Speaking to more than 70 people at Levin's Electra Business Break- fast Forum last Thursday, part of a nine-day nationwide tour to promote his book Daughters of Erebus, inclu- ding at Paper Plus in Coastlands mall, the veteran broadcaster said: nobody who saw the wreckage could believe it had once been a DC-10''. Daughters of Erebus examines not only the technical details of the crash and subsequent inquiries, but also the personal toll it took on the lives of the five women in Mr Collins' fam- ily, wife Maria and four daughters, aged 15, 13, and nine at the time. Holmes said the book involved much painful research'', and for the Collins' girls remembering it all. Waiting for the news, and bearing the ignominy of seeing their father being blamed for the accident, their sense of outrage is as strong now as it was 30 years ago,'' he said. He said the book was in no way intended to damage the airline. The Air New Zealand board of 1979 decided the Chippendale report, blaming an experienced 45-year-old pilot, with more than 11,000 flying hours, and rated one of the most cautious men in the fleet, for not looking at the radar'' and flying too low'', suited them fine, he said. What the Mahon commission pub- licly exposed was the flight co- ordinates given to the pilots were changed in the aircraft's computer the night before the flight, and neither pilot was informed. Holmes said co-ordinates never changed after briefing, so it would not be something either pilot would expect or need to check again.
