About 100 people braved freezing wind and chilly water for the swim last year, and this year's event will see more prizes, including a weekend away at Wellington's Museum Hotel for the two best-dressed people. More FM promotions co-ordinator Kieran Welsby was blown away by last year's event, and said he is hoping for an even better one this year. Last year's crowd was just huge. Punters made a huge effort to dress up, and everybody had a great time.'' The Levin-Waitarere Surf Life- saving Club will be monitoring swimmers, he said. Sunday, June 26, 11am, Waitarere Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, Waitarere Beach. Register at More FM, Levin or morefm.co.nz. Stream given facelift Friends of the Tikotu Stream and Keep Para- paraumu Beautiful members celebrated Arbor Day by planting more than 300 plants and trees along the Tikotu Stream bank in rainy conditions at Paraparaumu Beach on Saturday morning. Councillor Diane Ammundsen, of Keep Kapiti Beautiful, said the planting was changing a rather bar- ren reserve and stream bank into an attractive area. Last year's plants have done extremely well and we hope for the same again this year.'' The plants were from the Kapiti Enterprise Trust nursery in Rau- mati South, named the Titoki Trust. Anyone wishing to help weed, plant or mulch for an hour can join in on the second Saturday of the month, at 11am, at the reserve, behind the Oakley Court flats, off Eatwell Ave. Morning nap: A fur seal used Raumati Beach as a resting place yesterday morning, attracting the attention of people walking along the beach. Raumati man Rod Clark said he saw the seal at about 10am yesterday, and a few people were gathering around and taking photos of it. He said he warned people who were approach- ing the seal, saying it ''has bad breath and a bad tem- per, so it's best to keep clear of him''. Sign off: Ready for lift-off -- or lift-up, anyway -- is one of the new Kapiti Airport signs set to be installed on the old HeliPro hangar at the airfield. The Kapiti Observer got a sneak peek on Tuesday of the sign while it was still in the RPS Signs workshop where it was created, pictured here with production manager Marcus Lapwood. The sign, made from baked aluminium and measuring 2.4 metres by 7.2m, was set for installation over the next few days.
