In 2009, the Friends of Queen Eliz- abeth Park and the Raumati South Residents Association were awarded $34,125 and $36,567, respectively, by the Department of Conservation for ecological restoration in the park over two years. The money included the purchase of 48,000 plants. The 19,000 remaining plants, which include additional plants from the Queen Elizabeth Park nursery, need to be planted before the end of 2011, says Greater Wellington Regional Council s Kapiti councillor Nigel Wil- son. But planting 19,000 plants in one season is a huge job for two volunteer groups. They really need help. People are invited to the park on Saturday from 9.30am till noon. Bring own gloves and spade. See gw.govt.nz/events. There's nothing like thrill of being there Red passion: Liverpool fans hold their scarves high while singing You'll Never Walk Alone before the match at the Kop End in Anfield. Photo: REUTERS CONTINUED Page 39 It takes something special to give a person goosebumps for 90 minutes, but attend a football game in England and you might share that experience, says reporter Ben Strang. Simply walking into some of the most famous stadiums in Europe and America can make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up as you realise just where you are. On a recent whirlwind trip to the northern hemisphere I visited as many sports games as my wallet would allow -- football matches in Germany and England, basketball and baseball in New York. The first event was a Bayern Munich football match at Munich s Allianz Arena. The €350 million (NZ$630m) stadium is covered in inflated foam sheets, which allows it to be lit in red, blue, or white, to suit the home team. About 66,000 people can cram into the three-tiered stadium, which is nearly double that of Wel- lington s Westpac Stadium, and that creates an incredible atmos- phere.
