Lexus CT200h: The base model looks much the same as its posher, much more expensive siblings. Iwas just a tad disappointed with my first drive of the CT200h Lexus. The only models on hand for the car's launch were the Limited and F-Sport versions, both of which failed to impress me with their ride quality. For me, the Lexus brand has always been about ride quality. Even the previous cheapest Lexus, the iS, is now a paragon over bumps and rills having become in its recent iterations as smooth a compact executive car as you can find. Which is why I requested some time in the newest bearer of the cheapest Lexus mantle, figuring that instead of the posher models' lower profile wheels and tyres, its 16-inch items might provide it with the decent level of ride quality possessed by the majority of the brand's offerings. It worked. The low-rent CT is everything its more expensive siblings aren't. It patters among the alarmingly swollen manhole mountains in and around Christchurch with the judder-and-jolt-free nonchalance expected of a Lexus. The good thing is, there appears to be little in the way of handling compromise. If anything, the electric power steering is a touch more informative and the sense that the driver is at the very fulcrum of the car's cornering attitude is always reassuringly present. Also, from the Lexus' finely- organised driving position, the car has a seat-of-the-pants feel about it that deserves rather more power than its albeit frugal hybrid system affords. It's delightfully languid when left to its own devices in tight traffic and when open- road cruising, but when you require a quicker sprint, through more accelerative gearing and better engine response, it's advisable to twist the console knob to Sport which sharpens the car giving it a demeanour closer to a performance car. The knob can be used to select electric power or EV, for stealthy driveway progress, and when you ask for 'Eco' the car will make best use of its hybrid resources so it is slow to deplete battery storage and the fuel tank. 'Normal' is just that, and is the one setting I least used. For all that, and with a lot of town-and-around work, I did manage a 4.5L/100km average during my tenure of the car and would have done even better if I hadn't been in ''Sport'' so much, trying to find that elusive performance factor. For its $51,500 -- which is $12,000 less expensive than the top Prius and less than $2000 more costly than the cheapest version -- the plain CT200h leaves a little out when its specification is compared with those of the $67,600 Limited and $69,000 F-Sport. But the items it misses are not that important. True, its wheels aren't quite as fashionable as its range mates are, and it doesn't get their dedicated in-dash sat-nav.
