In terms of advertising exposure this could have cost tens of thousands of dollars. We got it for free. It was a wonderful package of images. Not only did they broadcast that our coast was the playground of Wellington but the use of the charming Mar-Mite Shop to background the story revealed our history as a bach-based holiday community. But wait there is more! Nature Coast Enterprise organised an impressive display of our local food producers with their specialized wares. The display delighted Breakfast host Petra Bagust. The fact is, we in the Kapiti Horowhenua region have good soils for producing high quality and varied crops and we have world standard skills and technology in horticulture. This is increasingly being appreciated.TVNZ Breakfast Show coincided with Pak N Save's own promotion of local produce. Well done to Pak N Save. When mainstream outlets start putting local produce and prepared foods on their shelves it means good news for the local economy. Kapiti Coast District Council through its District Plan Review process is also working towards removing impediments and encouraging the local food industry. Food is a sunrise industry both locally and globally. 2145884BR Food -- Our Sunrise Industry Chris Barber 2145884BR Book worm: Preschooler Max Wootton surrounded by books in Paekakariki's new library. Old building gets new lease of life By MARGARET IRVINE Part tennis club, part public library, Paekakariki s newest facility is an innovative use of building space in the township. The upgrade of the tennis court and clubrooms on Wellington Rd has provided a practical solution with the Paekakariki Tennis Club and library sharing the heritage building. The building can also double as a community meeting space, said mayor Jenny Rowan at the opening. There has been generosity and goodwill on both sides to make this dream a reality. The tennis club gifted the courts and clubrooms to the council, which upgraded the facility to bring it into line with other parts of the district. Local iwi Ngati Haumia has named the building in memory of Matekitewhawhai Reihana, who worked hard for the community. A system of foldaway and lockable library shelves and containers will ensure the library collection is secure when not operating. The new library joins the Kapiti District Libraries network. Borrowers will be able to access the district s collection of fiction and non- fiction, children s and adult books, CDs and DVDs, and be able to res- erve books, said manager Leslie Clague. We have internet access and the building is wireless capable so you can bring along your laptop during opening hours, she said. Sharing the premises with a ten- nis club is an interesting concept, she said. We won t be hiring out tennis racquets, but I have made sure there will be two tennis magazine subscriptions for the library, an Australian one and a New Zealand one. Ms Rowan said the project cost $170,000 -- made up of $80,000 for the tennis courts and $90,000 for the building upgrade, funded out of districtwide rates. Moving the library from St Peter s Hall has also meant refurbishment of that hall can continue. Initial opening hours are 1.30pm to 4.30pm Mondays and Wednesdays, and 9am to 1pm Saturdays.
