Speedway to aid overseas debut Going overseas: Foxton stockcar driver Peter Rees, on a victory lap after a recent win in Palmerston North, above, will compete overseas in September. Photo: SPORTSIMAGES.CO.NZ By STEVE GREEN Foxton stockcar driver Peter Rees is well known in the Kiwi speedway scene and in September plans to make his mark on the world scene, competing in Holland and England. Rees won the world 240ci stockcar championships in Rotorua in January, qualifying him for a drive in the Brisca F1 stockcar world final along with Nelson's Dale Ewers who won the New Zealand title. Rees is building a stockcar to race on the trip, but still has to find money to pay for living expenses, travel costs and stockcar running costs. To help with his expenses, there will be a charity speedway race day at Harrisville Speedway just off State Highway 1, South of Bulls, this Saturday. Harrisville Track owner Brent Harris has donated his Ohakea track and preparation time and Palmerston North speedway track manager Bryan Puklowski and his team are doing the same. The 22-race programme at Harrisville includes superstocks, stockcars, ministocks, and derby teams racing. There will be 60 stockcars and 20 superstocks on the programme. The action will include a number of sprintcars putting on high speed displays as well as a celebrity stockcar race with some former speedway stars entered. Saturday, 1pm, gate opens 11am, Harrisville Speedway, adults $5, family $10. More pulling power Going diesel: The Mitsubishi Outlander will get a diesel drivetrain later this year. New Zealand's favourite SUV is to get a diesel at last, writes DAVE MOORE. New Zealand's favourite SUV, the Mitsubishi Outlander will soon get its long-awaited diesel powertrain. The 2.2-litre unit will use the same SST gearbox pioneered by the company's Evo X rally car. The engine supplier is PSA Group, whose Citroen C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 models have used the same 2.2-litre engine and transmission for some time, with the latter French model having been available in New Zealand since late 2009. Mitsubishi already uses the 115kW/380Nm turbodiesel four with the SST gearbox in European market Outlanders and we will see the same Outlander model here by the end of the second quarter of this year. The diesel option will extend the Outlander's tow rating to 2000kg from the petrol model's 1500kg, and while it will be effectively of premium VR or VRX specification, the latter with leather and all the fruit, it is unlikely to be as expensive as the diesel SST- equipped Peugeot, which is priced up to $59,990. The diesel-powered Outlander will only be a stop-gap model however, as by the end of next year a new completely redesigned third- generation Outlander will appear using Mitsubishi's own diesel engine -- a two-litre turbocharged unit -- along with the same SST gearbox. At the same time, a similar transmission will appear in the 1.8-litre turbodiesel version of Mitsubishi's smaller light SUV the ASX, completing the drivetrain lineup for that model too. Its diesel currently doesn't offer a two- pedal option. Having its own diesel power units will not spell the end of Mitsubishi's relationship with the PSA Group, as the company is shipping thousands of examples of its iMiev electric car to Europe where it can be bought or leased as Peugeot iOn and Citroen C-Zero models, giving the French concern something of a foil for the only other electric car available in Europe, Nissan's Leaf.
