VIEW SUNDAY AT 3.00PM RON EDMOND 0800 452-676 027 248-0689 Captain Thompson: Three-year-old Bruno Thompson takes the controls of Kapiti Coastguard vessel Pharazyn Rescue on Saturday with mother Corinne's help, during the open day at Paraparaumu Beach. President Rob Faulke said, while numbers were modest, it was good to have families look at the operations at the Paraparaumu Beach and Waikanae bases. He said the open day was a New Zealand Coastguard initiative, called May Day, to try to boost community interest in the crews throughout the country. Mrs Thompson said she had brought Bruno down because he is ''mad on boats'', and he took the opportunity to jump onto the boat and have a good look around. Mr Faulke said that although the day was a bit slow, people got to see how the service operates in Kapiti. Optometrists look to raise funds Optometrist Annette Morgan is inviting Kapiti Coasters to help Christchurch while helping themselves. Ms Morgan is a member of the Visique group of optometrists which is making a $2 donation to the Christchurch earthquake fund with every eye exam during the month of May. There will also be donation boxes in every practice. Visique are aiming to raise more than $20,000. Ms Morgan said a colleague from her profession died in the February earthquake while dis- mantling a church organ in Dur- ham Street -- carrying out a much loved hobby . In addition, some of the com- pany s branches were very badly damaged in the quake and will not open for many months, she said. Eye exam appointments can be booked and donations made at Visique Optometrists on the ground floor of the Pier Apartments.
